THE PERENNIAL GARDENS
Thirty some years ago we started planting perennials in the rich, valley-bottom soil around this old farmhouse. In 1980 this was the only kind of gardening we knew. Since then we have travelled many horticultural miles. Over the decades, our landscape vision has evolved into a fusion of flowers, ornamental trees, rock work, sculpture and stalwart New England architecture.
Our gardens dwell in a dynamic state of exuberance, decay and renewal, moment by moment, decade by decade. As years go by, old planting schemes become exhausted. Once-favorite plants become overgrown, die out and sometimes loose their magic. Shade takes over and tree roots move in. The time comes comes to dig it all up and start afresh. Several seasons may pass before a new vision and a new garden emerges from the old. We have learned to be patient and let the garden evolve.
Our perennial plantings are mulched each fall with a few inches of shredded leaves and are occasionally side-dressed with limestone and organic fertilizer. To keep our plants looking their best during periods of drought, we soak the gardens overnight with overhead sprinklers.
